Role description

The Underwriter’s role is to work closely with the Senior SML Underwriter and Management Liability Practice Leader to assist in building a profitable and fast growing portfolio within the SML binder guidelines and underwriting strategy, and to create and maintain positive broker relationships to generate new business and renew existing business.

Key responsibilities & accountabilities

Contribute to the growth of an exciting new portfolio by quoting new business and renewals (when applicable).

Assist in the underwriting of complex or large new business and renewals alongside the Senior SML Underwriter, attending client meetings or market presentations where required.

Business development: proactive development of broker relationships including business travel to the territories underwriting within, either for conference attendance or broker development.

Learn to be able to talk in-depth regarding the SML product (across country specific wordings) with an understanding of the nuances of the local market to ensure competitive edge (with the domestic market).

Build and share knowledge for emerging trends in legislation, claims and other pertinent areas of exposure affecting the portfolio.

Companywide knowledge across divisions and their products to enable cross-sell opportunity and collaboration.  Key points of contact will be with our P&C and Healthcare teams.

Act as an internal referral point and knowledge base when considering cross-sell exposures.

You’re highly analytical with excellent logic and critical thinking skills;

Strong numeracy and communication skills (both verbal and written);

You’re confident and self-driven and enjoy working to deadlines and targets;

Strong work ethic with an ability to operate effectively under pressure;

Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook);

Above all you’re a team player with a passion for growing a new portfolio!

Knowledge & Experience

Experience in underwriting SML, Healthcare or General liability insurance;

Genuine interest in the class and building a new portfolio

Computer literacy with strong Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills in particular;

The mind-set to understand, quantify and embrace risk in a commercial manner.
