Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Rust Engineer to lead the evolution of our backend systems. You will develop tooling to optimise the worker acquisition funnel, remove manual bottlenecks, and reduce operational costs. This includes implementing skill verification systems, compliance automation, and engineering the migration away from legacy Ruby to modern services in Java, Python, and Rust. Your leadership will be pivotal in architectural planning, cross‑team collaboration, and the successful decommissioning of the Ruby monolith without service disruption.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build large‑scale backend systems that streamline the worker acquisition process and reduce Cost per Hire.
  • Lead engineering initiatives and provide technical guidance across Java, Python, Rust, and Ruby technologies.
  • Drive system migrations from monolithic architecture to service‑based infrastructure, ensuring performance and reliability.
  • Maintain and extend internal APIs and integrations with external vendors.
  • Ensure high code standards through testing, reviews, and adherence to engineering best practices.
  • Document architecture, service contracts, and deployment pipelines clearly and comprehensively.
  • Champion observability, performance tuning, and scalability within backend infrastructure.

What You Bring

  • Extensive experience as a Staff or Lead Backend Engineer in distributed and service‑oriented systems.
  • Proficiency in multiple backend languages, particularly Ruby, Java, Python, and Rust.
  • A strong background in monolith decomposition, legacy system migration, or platform modernisation.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems and scalable API design.
  • Leadership capability to influence and mentor engineers across teams and projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills suitable for cross-functional collaboration.
  • A practical approach to system design, with a focus on sustainability and operational efficiency.
