Surety Underwriter

The Surety Underwriter role involves assessing and underwriting surety bond applications to ensure risk is effectively managed. This position supports the organisation’s efforts to expand its surety product portfolio and requires a focus on delivering accurate and timely credit evaluations.

The organisation is seeking a candidate with relevant expertise to contribute to their surety underwriting team, with opportunities to develop within a dynamic environment.

Role Overview
The Surety Underwriter will be responsible for evaluating surety bond applications, assessing creditworthiness, and making underwriting decisions. The successful candidate will work closely with brokers and clients to understand risk profiles and support the launch of new surety products. Success in this role will be measured by the quality of risk assessments and the ability to develop new business capacity.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Hold the GIUW COB Surety qualification or equivalent relevant experience
  • Manage the assessment process for surety bond applications
  • Analyse financial and risk data to inform underwriting decisions
  • Communicate effectively with brokers, clients, and internal teams
  • Demonstrate industry knowledge of surety underwriting practices

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of developing and launching new surety products
  • Experience in building and managing a book of surety business
  • Ability to prepare business plans and contribute to strategic planning

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the underwriting process for surety bond applications from initial assessment to approval
  • Analyse financial documents and risk profiles to determine suitable credit limits
  • Collaborate with brokers and internal teams to develop new business opportunities
  • Build a book of surety business from scratch, including acquiring capacity to launch new products
  • Prepare and review business plans aligned with growth strategies
  • Support discussions with senior management regarding risk appetite and capacity

Requirements

  • Right to work in the UK
  • Relevant underwriting qualifications or extensive experience in surety or credit underwriting
  • Based on-site in the UK
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in underwriting or a related field
  • Willing to start immediately or as per agreed start date
