Senior Data Analyst
Location: City of London (Hybrid – 50% office based)
Salary: £70,000–£85,000 + 20–40% bonus + benefits
Gravitas has partnered with a well-established London Market insurance organisation to recruit a Senior Data Analyst into its growing Data Analytics team. This is a newly created role and a key hire as the business evolves its analytics capability from platform delivery to commercially embedded insight.
London Market experience is essential.
The Role
Reporting to the Data Analytics Manager, the Senior Data Analyst will be a hands-on individual contributor and the most senior technical analytics hire in the team (currently three Data Analysts). The role sits as an intermediary layer between the Data Analytics Manager and more junior analysts, providing technical leadership, mentoring and driving best practice—without direct line management responsibility (initially).
This position will focus on embedding analytics into underwriting, claims and exposure management decision‑making, moving the function away from isolated reporting and toward value‑added, business‑partnered insight.
Key Responsibilities
Business Partnering & Value‑Added Analytics
- Act as the senior analytics business partner for one or more underwriting classes, identifying opportunities to improve pricing, portfolio steering, renewal decisions and exposure management.
- Translate open‑ended commercial questions into clearly scoped analyses and Power BI dashboards.
- Work closely with underwriting, claims and wider business teams to identify automation and efficiency opportunities.
- Identify practical ways to enhance analytics workflows using AI tooling (e.g. LLMs, agentic tools for exploration, code generation, documentation and insight generation).
- Support the Data Analytics Manager in shaping and delivering external analytical propositions from discovery through to production.
Team Maturity, Standards & Power BI Governance
- Apply and embed analytics development standards including peer review, documentation, testing and production sign‑off.
- Lead by example on Power BI engineering discipline, using PBIP / TMDL formats, Git‑based version control, branching strategies and pull requests.
- Contribute to Power BI workspace governance, including Dev/Test/Prod separation, deployment pipelines, dataset endorsement and access control.
- Coach and mentor Data Analysts on SQL, DAX, data modelling, visual design and analytics engineering best practice.
- Partner closely with Data Engineering to influence curated data models and semantic layers.
- Deliver complex analytics initiatives end‑to‑end, from scoping and estimation through to handover and review.
- Operate within an Agile framework, contributing to backlog prioritisation, epics and user stories.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- 5–10 years’ experience in data analytics or BI, including at least 2–3 years within a Lloyd’s syndicate, managing agent, London Market broker or specialty (re)insurer.
- Advanced SQL with experience across the Azure data stack (Data Factory, Synapse / Fabric, SQL‑based semantic layers).
- Advanced Power BI skills: star‑schema modelling, advanced DAX, Power Query / M, performance tuning, RLS and deployment pipelines.
- Strong understanding of Power BI engineering and governance, including PBIP / TMDL and Git‑based workflows.
- Proven experience conducting peer review and QA of analytics assets.
- Excellent stakeholder communication skills, including presenting to underwriting teams.
- Demonstrated ability to turn ambiguous business problems into delivered analytical outcomes.
Desirable
- Python for data analysis (e.g. pandas, notebooks) and ability to collaborate with Actuarial and Data Science teams.
- Practical experience using AI / LLM tooling within analytics workflows (e.g. Copilot for Power BI / Fabric, agentic assistants, code‑generation tools).
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, dbt, Azure DevOps / GitHub Actions and data‑quality tooling.
- Actuarial or actuarial‑adjacent background.
