About the company
Our client is a construction tech business building software that connects project planning with day-to-day execution on site, giving planners, operators and leadership a single source of truth across complex projects.
The product is used by large, enterprise-grade contractors delivering complex construction, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and infrastructure projects. The business is scaling into new markets, and the bar for engineering quality is scaling with it.
The role
A hands-on leadership role. You'll split your time between coding, designing platform architecture, and growing your team. You'll report to the Head of Engineering and partner closely with peer Engineering Managers and feature teams to define and deliver the core platform capabilities: CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, observability, security and developer experience.
Scope
- Reports to: Head of Engineering
- Scope: Greenfield Platform and DevOps team — you'll help hire, shape and lead it
- Direct reports: 1–5 engineers (Platform / DevOps) as the team scales
Key responsibilities
Platform engineering
- Architect and deliver core platform services — infrastructure provisioning, CI/CD pipelines, observability, secrets management and developer tooling — used by all feature engineering teams
- Drive adoption of reusable platform components, internal libraries and shared services built on .NET Core and Angular, reducing duplication across squads
- Own cloud infrastructure design and operations on AWS, including networking, IAM, cost management and availability architecture
- Debug and manage large-scale enterprise systems; lead incident response, post-mortems and long-term reliability improvements
- Define and enforce platform standards: branching strategies, deployment patterns, container orchestration and environment parity across the engineering organisation
Security, privacy and non-functional requirements
- Champion security and privacy by design — threat modelling, SAST/DAST, dependency scanning and least-privilege IAM embedded into every platform workflow from the start
- Be the organisation's advocate for NFRs: performance, scalability, reliability, observability and compliance. Partner with all Engineering Managers to ensure feature teams meet platform-defined standards
- Own platform-level SLOs and SLAs, and drive the engineering decisions that keep systems highly available and performant at enterprise scale
- Ensure data security and privacy controls — encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, access control — are built into the platform and inherited by default by all services
People leadership and delivery
- Build the Platform / DevOps team: lead hiring end-to-end, run structured interviews, make sound decisions, and onboard engineers effectively in a startup environment
- Run regular 1:1s, give timely and honest feedback, and support each team member's career growth
- Manage performance actively — recognise strong contributors and address issues early
- Own team delivery against roadmap commitments: planning, estimation, risk management, and clear communication of progress and blockers
- Act as first point of contact for cross-team blockers, shared infrastructure issues and platform reliability escalations
Cross-functional partnership
- Partner with peer Engineering Managers and feature teams to translate product and engineering priorities into platform roadmap items
- Contribute to engineering-wide decisions on process, tooling standards, coding practices and team culture
- Work with Product, Design and QA to ensure platform capabilities enable fast, safe, high-quality product delivery
What we're looking for
Required
- 7–10 years of software engineering experience, with meaningful time in platform, infrastructure or DevOps roles
- Strong hands-on experience with .NET Core and Angular
- Deep knowledge of cloud technologies, AWS strongly preferred (EC2, ECS/EKS, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch and related services)
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tooling such as Terraform
- Proven experience debugging and operating large-scale, enterprise-grade distributed systems
- Prior experience leading or managing a team of engineers, including hiring, performance management and career development
- Security-first mindset: experience embedding security controls into CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure and application architecture
- Strong NFR advocate — you've measurably improved reliability, performance or scalability in past roles
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and building from scratch in a startup or scale-up environment
Nice to have
- Experience in construction tech, proptech, or other asset-heavy industry verticals
- Exposure to platform engineering practices: internal developer portals, golden paths, self-service infrastructure
