Starting your career Scrum & agile delivery

There is no single prescribed route into Scrum Master work. Some people start in a junior or associate role, with titles such as Junior Scrum Master or Associate Delivery PM. Others build towards the role through certification. The two best-known are the Professional Scrum Master (PSM) and the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM). Neither has universal prerequisites, which makes both accessible early in a career, and the PSM is exam-based without a mandatory course.

A certification shows you understand the framework. What brings it to life is describing how you have helped a team plan, deliver and improve, whether in a project, a placement or a neighbouring role.

Facilitation is the foundation, but the professionals who progress understand how delivery is governed and coordinated around the team as well.

  • Scrum and Kanban: running team-level practice and keeping work flowing
  • Facilitation and coaching: helping teams organise themselves and removing obstacles
  • Scaled agile: working with SAFe where agile is coordinated across several teams
  • Structured governance: moving comfortably between agile ways of working and PRINCE2 or MSP
  • Delivery tooling: using Jira and Confluence, or Azure DevOps in Microsoft-centred organisations
  • Stakeholder management: bringing sponsors and business teams along from the start
  • Dependency management: handling cross-team dependencies without losing momentum
  • Government delivery standards: working through discovery, alpha, beta and live phases in the public sector
  • Responsible use of AI: applying AI tools in delivery work with sound judgement

In financial services, an understanding of operational resilience is also becoming part of the toolkit for delivery roles.

A Scrum Master supporting one team sits at one end of the table, while Agile Delivery Leads and Agile Coaches responsible for several teams or organisation-wide ways of working sit at the other. As you take on more teams, more dependencies and more complex programmes, the numbers tend to move with you, and that progression is what the table below shows.

Seniority Level Typical Permanent Salary
Junior Scrum Master/Associate Delivery PM £35,000 - £50,000
Scrum Master / Agile Delivery Manager £50,000 - £75,000
Senior Scrum Master / Agile Delivery Manager £65,000 - £92,000

London shows the highest range, with other regions sitting closer together. Local employers shape the picture: banking and public sector technology hubs in the North-West, health-tech, gaming and agency employers in Yorkshire and Humber, aerospace and defence in the South-West, public sector delivery in the North-East and a strong fintech presence in Edinburgh.

Some roles that centre on Scrum ask for certification, and the route can deepen over time. The PSM has three levels, with PSM II and III testing more complex Scrum practice, and the CSM has advanced certifications beyond the entry level. The CSM renews every two years with continuing education credits, while PSM certifications do not expire.

In scaled environments, SAFe certifications are worth considering. PRINCE2 and MSP help where agile sits alongside structured governance. APM and BCS qualifications are well recognised across the UK market, and they can support a move towards programme and delivery leadership.

Taking your agile delivery career further

Progression runs through team delivery, scaled delivery, coaching and leadership, and people move between these routes over a career.

  • Senior Scrum Master: owning more complex delivery and guiding colleagues through harder situations
  • Senior Agile Delivery Manager: taking accountability for delivery across several teams and their dependencies
  • Agile Delivery Lead: setting direction for delivery practice across technology programmes
  • Agile Coach: helping leaders and teams adopt better ways of working across an organisation
  • Release Train Engineer: coordinating delivery across many teams in scaled agile environments
  • Contract and interim: bringing delivery experience to different organisations, often for transformation or critical programmes

Experience across several teams, scaled frameworks and structured governance can widen the options at senior level. We can help you understand where your experience is most valued.

A Scrum Master facilitates and coaches one team, helping it work within the framework and removing the obstacles in its way. An agile delivery manager is accountable for delivery across several teams, which brings in dependencies, stakeholder relationships and governance as well.

Titles vary between organisations, so the same job title can describe very different work. A role advertised as Scrum Master may call for delivery accountability across several teams, so the detail of the brief is worth exploring. We can help you read what a role involves.

AI tools are taking on more of the routine side of delivery work, such as reporting, documentation and first-draft analysis. For experienced professionals, more of the value moves to interpreting what the tools produce, challenging it and acting on it.

Senior professionals are also increasingly asked to help teams decide where AI adds value, how it is governed and how data protection obligations are met, particularly in regulated environments. Being able to describe how you have used AI responsibly in your own delivery work is a useful addition to your story.

The same delivery skills can lead to very different work depending on the organisation you join.

  • Start-ups building from 0-1: shaping the first ways of working as teams form
  • Scale-ups after product-market fit: keeping delivery coherent as teams multiply and demand grows
  • Established and regulated organisations: delivering larger programmes within governance expectations, across fintech, the public sector and the third sector

Roles also span insurtech, healthtech, housing, energy and transport, each with its own pace and priorities. We can share how organisations differ in delivery maturity and the type of work on offer.

Security-cleared Scrum Master and delivery roles sit in a distinct corner of the market. They appear across defence, aerospace, national security, law enforcement and central government, where programmes handle sensitive information and delivery teams are cleared to match. Some adverts ask for active Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV) clearance from day one. Others ask for eligibility to obtain it, and some employers sponsor clearance once you are in post. Eligibility depends on factors such as nationality and residency history, which differ from role to role, so it is worth checking the requirements early.

Some of these roles involve scaled delivery, such as leading agile across several teams, supporting programme-level planning and representing delivery in governance forums. For experienced professionals, clearance is a way into complex, long-running programmes rather than a qualification. If you already hold clearance, or work in a sector where sponsorship is possible, we can help you understand which roles are open to you.
