Tech quality starts here.
The software & tech people rely on every day only works because someone checked it properly. Skilled QA and testing professionals are central to how UK organisations release reliable, secure products at pace.
From start-ups releasing a first product to scale-ups growing after product-market fit and financial services teams delivering in regulated environments, we connect QA professionals with teams that value quality.
Building your QA Tester career
There’s no single route into product, and many strong product professionals start in another discipline. Common routes include:
- From engineering: developers who move towards customer and business outcomes, often into product engineering or technical product management
- From design and research: UX designers and researchers who bring deep customer understanding into product decisions
- From delivery and analysis: product owners, business analysts and delivery professionals who move into product management, particularly in larger organisations
A specific degree is rarely essential. Product engineers usually need strong technical foundations, whether from a computer science degree or hands-on development experience. For product managers, designers and leaders, employers tend to focus on evidence of impact: features you’ve launched, decisions you’ve influenced and outcomes you’ve improved. Certifications such as Scrum.org’s Professional Scrum Product Owner can help when moving in from an adjacent discipline, and experience with AI-powered products is increasingly valuable.
You don’t need every tool on a job description to get started. These are the foundations that matter most early on:
- Attention to detail and structured thinking: breaking a feature down into all the ways it might fail
- Clear written communication: bug reports that developers can understand and reproduce quickly
- Test design: writing test cases that cover normal use, edge cases and unexpected inputs
- Test management tools: familiarity with tools such as Jira for tracking work and defects
- Basic SQL: checking data directly rather than relying only on what the screen shows
- An introduction to automation: some exposure to tools such as Playwright, Cypress or Selenium, alongside a language like Python, JavaScript or Java
As your career develops, API testing, CI/CD and behaviour-driven development become increasingly useful. Early on, being able to explain how you’d approach testing an unfamiliar feature often makes a stronger impression than a long list of tools.
Product careers offer strong earning potential, particularly as responsibilities grow from shipping features to shaping strategy, commercial outcomes and teams. The biggest differences tend to come from scope rather than title alone. Ownership of a product’s commercial performance, experience of scaling after product-market fit, work in regulated environments such as banking and investment, and leadership of product teams all have a clear influence on pay.

QA testing is an accessible way into technology, with transferable skills, clear progression into automation and leadership, and work that directly shapes product quality. Building technical and automation skills early tends to create the widest range of future opportunities.
Most testers start with manual and exploratory testing, and it’s a valuable foundation. It teaches you how to think like a user, design good test cases and spot the edge cases automated checks can miss. Those skills remain important throughout a QA career.
Automation is the natural next step for many testers. Learning a language such as Python, JavaScript or Java, then a tool such as Playwright, Cypress or Selenium, lets you build tests that run automatically with every release. Starting small, for example by automating a few repetitive checks, is often the most effective way to begin. Over time, combining strong manual testing judgement with automation skills gives you the broadest range of roles to choose from.
Where QA experience can lead
Yes. Software failure has real consequences for businesses, particularly in financial services, healthcare and the public sector, so organisations continue to value experienced testers who protect quality and customer trust.
What has shifted is the kind of experience employers look for. Many teams now want testers who combine strong exploratory judgement with automation, CI/CD and engineering skills, so quality is built into delivery rather than checked at the end. Experience shaping test strategy, improving release confidence and working closely with developers is especially valued. For experienced professionals, being clear about where your strengths lie, whether that’s automation, performance, test leadership or a particular domain, will help you target the roles where you’ll stand out.
For many experienced automation testers, software development engineer in test (SDET) and quality engineering roles are a natural next step. These roles sit closer to development. Rather than testing a finished feature, they help teams build quality in from the start, through test frameworks, tooling and close collaboration with engineers. The move usually builds on automation experience and adds:
- Stronger programming skills: writing clean, maintainable code in the same languages as the development team
- Framework design: building test frameworks and tooling that whole teams can use and extend
- CI/CD and infrastructure: making automated tests a reliable, fast part of every release
- Testing earlier: contributing to design discussions, code review and testability before features are built
Experienced testers bring something many developers don’t: a deep instinct for how things fail. Combining that with engineering skills is what makes quality engineers so valuable. We can help you understand how different organisations define these roles and where your experience fits.
AI tools are speeding up routine test creation and maintenance, putting more weight on testing judgement. AI-powered features also need new testing approaches, particularly in regulated sectors, which creates real opportunities for experienced testers who can assure them.
Experienced testers can progress into senior automation, SDET or quality engineering roles, test architecture, specialist areas such as performance testing, or leadership as a QA Lead or Head of Quality. The stage of the business often shapes which path opens first.
In banking, fintech and investment, testing protects the systems customers rely on to manage their money, which makes QA central to how these organisations operate. The work often combines strong testing practice with high standards of evidence and reliability:
- Payments and transactions: making sure journeys work correctly every time, including the edge cases
- Data integrity: confirming that balances, records and calculations are accurate
- Regression at scale: protecting complex, established systems as new features are released
- Evidence and traceability: documenting what was tested and why, so teams can demonstrate quality with confidence
- Resilience and performance: checking that systems hold up under load and recover reliably
Fintech start-ups and scale-ups often move quickly, with automation and fast release cycles at the centre. Established banks and investment firms typically run larger, mature platforms, where careful regression testing and clear evidence are key. Experience in either can be a strong foundation for the other.
